The increase in screen resolution did the trick easily. Thanks very
much.
I have found in Synaptic that there are packages available for
configuring printers which were not installed with Ubuntu Hoary. One was
for USB printers but was said to be unauthorised and possibly risky. The
other called foomatic-gui has not yet worked. I installed it but there
are problems which I am working on. It asks for some old and
unobtainable packages to be imported. I edited to call for the upgraded
packages and hope to get the package working without much fuss.
I left the problem while I went to the WOMAD festival.
