Hi.
There are various options depending on how in-depth you want to go.
You could go the whole hog and set up the whole thing yourself by using
Debian or Mandrake (Mandrake runs a good GUI, but it needs more memory
to run etc).
If you just want to use Linux to do the functions of Apache (web server)
and Samba (file shares), as well as simple email etc, you may want to go
with one of the packaged distros which run slightly older versions of
the packages, but the gui is done via a web interface. I have used
http://www.contribs.org for doing this at a friend's business, and other
than me SSHing into the box to do updates on it every now and again, it
works fine. However, you may find that many applications you are told
to use in howtos etc are not present on the system, and everything has
to be done using manually obtained RPM files (or via unpacking using
Tar). There are many other similar systems ranging from free to
scandously expensive out there.
Whatever you decide you may want to come to the meeting on Thursday and
have a look at the systems running, as well as this you can probably
find someone with some CDs.
Thanks.
Andrew.

Subject: [Herefordshire] New to Linux .. Question ..
Hi, I'm new to the list so forgive me if do something wrong ..
Anyway I want some advice ..
I am running an Apache server (windows version) , I want to move Apache
to a LAN attached PC running LINUX, which will become a server.
Anyway my question is, which of the many free variants of Linux
would be the one to use ?
I secondary requirement (if possible) is that I would like my Windows XP
system to be able to access files on the LINUX server, it must be able
to write and create these files, therefore they should also appear to
the Windows system as NFTS ..
Thanks In Advance,
ChrisColeman.
