[HLUG] silencing my dialup modem

hello all,

i recently bought an external serial port dialup modem, so that i
could get ubuntu connected to the internet. it works beautifully, but
the sound it made whilst connecting was horrific. i couldn't use the
internet at night because i didn't want to  wake the other people in
the house.

today i decided that i'd had enough, so took it apart (not too
difficult) and attacked it with my dad's soldering iron. the speaker
was only held in place by two soldered pins so i melted the solder on
those an pried the speaker out. the solder had a high melting point
and i got it up to about 400 deg c before it melted.

it's so much better now. it's so much more pleasant to use and i can
now go on the net at any hour of the night. highly recommended.
