[HLUG] Where is my new package?

Amazing how things can seem to go wrong. I downloaded a package as a
tarball, compiled it ok (message said so) and did the make and make
install afterwards. It seemed to go well but I can't find the new
package, djview, in the applications menu. It's a reader similar to pdf
readers so it should be under graphics.
I don't know if I have a failed install or a failed recognition by my
Gnome desktop.  Is there a simple command to check the installation? I
think dpkg works only on apt downloaded packages. I didn't use apt
because Synaptic (which uses apt) has failed to install djview, though
it works for other people. I found that out through question #9284 which
people have kindly answered with help but without a solution.
