Hi
As its been quiet on the mailing list recently I thought I start a new
thread.
Please add where you have seen Linux used in an unusual place, and where
you heard of it from..
* BBC 1 Saturday Sports results service. Grandstand used to use a
Linux fail over system (using Heartbeat) to ensure that if one of
the results servers fell over that the alternate one would fall
into place. Clockwork Systems from Birmingham demonstrated this
two years ago.
* BBC TV Weather service uses graphics courtesy of a proprietary New
Zealand company's Linux software.
* Ticketmaster creates PDF's for their e-tickets (IE the ones you
can print yourself to gain entry to the concert) using 'PDFlib
4.0.3 (C++/Linux 2.2.16-SMP)' it said on the PDF properties of my
eticket to see Squeeze this Saturday night.
* Bakers Oven Tills (courtesy of the Hereford Times last year) -
Wipe clean and open source !
* On the BBC3 Programme about scams, ie how you can fake a Wireless
access point to look like a normal hotel lobby. You could easily
tell from the screens that the they had used linux to show how
this could be done.
* TOM TOM GPS devices - They use some standard GPL routines in their
software to (apart from other things) connect using GPRS to a
mobile phone to update the Traffic info.
Has anyone got any others?
Julian
PS How did the last mtg go? Have we got any ideas for our Christmas Meal?
