And guess what? Dave's blog post about our meeting on Tuesday, 3rd post
down! Gosh hit the big time !!
Seriously though, it was a shame not to see more people turn up.
Mark and I with young families, Pete travelling over from via Gwynedd
made it why no one else?
Dave obviously put a lot of hard effort into setting his talk up, bring
all the hardware along, printing notes and he really knew his subject.
It was a very interesting meeting.
Can we have a constructive discussion about why we get so few members
along to meetings generally ?
There are some obvious reasons :-
1. It's dark and cold in the Winter
2. No beer at the day centre.
3. No wireless access at the Day Centre
But really apart from 1, its not a bad venue, centrally placed, with
quite a bit of parking near the bus and rail stations, and very cheap to
hire.
So please tell us, if there's a reason why you don't attend very often.
We know that the day isn't suitable for some, and that's a fair enough
point.
We are generally trying to put on more talks and discussions around a
particular theme, to give the meetings more focus. Tell us if this is
what you want? We still plan to have a pub based meeting soon, for a
change of scenery.
Likewise, the demonstration to the Hereford Friends of the Earth and
Green party went pretty well in the Autumn. We had one member who had
been trying installing Linux after that on an old laptop who asked us to
help him get it installed properly on Weds night. He was delighted when
Mark managed to fix it for him.
So, please fire away, but consider that :-
A), Yes it would be nice to put on better events, hire a room with full
fast net access, distro copying facilities, etc, but it all costs money
B), If we put on a more expansive outside event like, a Linux Install
day, we need lots of people who will commit to organise and man it. We
happy to try doing B, but only if we could be sure that there would be
enough members who really want to get involved.
So please tell us what you want from the LUG, and what would make you
consider coming more regularly?
Julian
