You can get a brand new APC UPS for less than half that (something like
the APC Back-UPS CS 350 would be fine). You then need to install and
configure apcupsd on the computer being protected. By default, when the
batteries are getting low, the UPS sends a signal to shut down the
computer; however, making it go into suspend instead shouldn't be too
difficult.
