Hi,

I thought I should join in the 'who is this OpenSure bunch?' speculation in person!

We're an open source consulting, hosting and server management company, an offshoot of KeepNet. OpenSure has, inadvertently, become a husband-and-wife outfit, but it didn' t start that way - Kevin is the technical brains and I do the marketing. We live just outside Leominster but have a business partner in Oxfordshire and our servers live in a data centre in East London. I do indeed know Julian's wife Sue, as I take our youngest to a toddler group that she goes to with one of her charges and I first met her several years ago at the school gate.

We've neglected the local business community until recently, just happening to have gained clients from the rest of the country, but now we'd like to be involved. We've got links with various groups in Herefordshire now, and HLUG seems an obvious connection for us - I'm so grateful you found us on Twitter. Sue first mentioned HLUG two or three years ago, but I didn't realise it was such an active group, and for that apologies. As I'm not the technical side of things I've suggested to Kevin that he comes along to a meeting, and we're making arrangements to get him along on the 26th March. I'm away that weekend, but if we can arrange childcare, he'll be there. A mundane consideration but an unavoidable one.

We're very evangelical about open source and happy to do whatever we can to promote and support it. Obviously we're not averse to gaining a bit more business - we have to eat - but our espousal of open source is as much about the ethics as anything else. Whether or not Kevin can make it along on the 26th we'll publicise the event on our blog and in our newsletter.

Heather

Kind regards

Details of our Hoss Awards and Guest Speaker for march 26 are now up on
the HLUG website and the first publicity mailouts have gone out.
So if you have any ideas for individuals or organisations in
herefordshire who deserve a HOSS award please email hoss at hlug.org.uk
pete is co-ordinating this.

Paul would like peoples views on libre office and whether it should be
included on an updated open source disc for march 26 - see section 6 on
PP http://piratepad.net/hQ3RVGdvKc

We have enough people who have committed to be there on the day for us
to be able to run the event but given the number of visitors who came to
SFD in Sept it would be good to have more help even if you can only
commit to a couple of hours - it's quite an interesting experience as a
real cross section of people come so whatever your level of experience
it will be useful. If you are interested please add your name to PP
section 1 -

Mark Wrights talk in the afternoon should be very interesting as he has
hands on experience of introducing open source software at Bristol
Council and if we are lucky we may get some herefordshire councillors
there as well so it would be good to have an informed audience for him

Bizarrely my wife knows about them via a local playgroup where she just
happened to mention 'open source' one day (about me), and found that they
are based in our village, or thereabouts. www.opensure.net Interesting site
!

I need to get in touch with them anyway. It would be nice to get some local
OSS companies involved but unless its for sponsorship we have to be seen to
be impartial as much as we can i think. There are other local OSS companies
that may also want to be involved too.

Still if they're willing to buy our weight in chocolate and 100 cuddly tux
toys i'm sure we can be bought ;-)

Any comments from anyone else on this ?

Julian
