if you have site developers - you don't actually need to 'learn' drupal
unless you want to -  like other CMS systems the backend maintenance
will be done by the development team - if by 'run' the site you mean
maintain and update content you can do this (as long as it has been set
up properly giving you the correct editing rights) without knowing how
the nuts and bolts of the site work - just as you can as a user add blog
entries to the HLUG site you should be able to log into your site and
edit and add content - what you are enabled to do will depend on the
user rights your development team give you.
