I915 is an intel graphics adaptor the other numner sounds like a wlam one
Intel graphics are open source and usually well supported out of the box ...
Sounds an odd one ....

I am offering these on Freecycle today but I thought I'd offer them here
too.
FREE - three faulty/incomplete desktop PC base units. These have no
RAM, only one has a hard disk (wiped) and two have CD-R drives. They
have Celeron CPUs, around 2.4 to 2.8GHz. All three are FAULTY and
incomplete as follows:
1. Will boot and Windows or Linux can be installed but is unstable and
freezes randomly. This one had a 40GB hard disk (wiped) and CD-R drive,
no RAM. (unbranded)
2. Sometimes won't boot and when it does attempting to install an OS
fails. Was removed from use due to being unstable. CD-R drive, no HDD or
RAM. (unbranded)
3. Will boot through the BIOS one time out of ten if you are lucky, but
once it does boot it seems stable and Windows or Linux should install
and run OK. No HDD, CD or RAM. Has XP Home COA sticker on case. (Packard
Bell)
This lot may be of use to someone for parts or to try to get working. I
suspect all will need motherboard repairs (replacement capacitors?).
Some of the PSU and CPU fans are noisy. You will need some PC2700 RAM
before you can do anything with any of them.
Also included is a bag containing a few computer leads and other bits
and pieces.
Free of charge and to go as a single lot. Collection from Hereford city
centre before next weekend please.
Please email me directly if interested.

I too have upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. It took about 4 hours online! Then it told me that my hardware was not up the job - couldn't cope with 3D, so I was left with the Classic desktop I have come to know and love. I would like to try Unity in due course. The problem may be my graphics card driver. Its a nVidia GeForce4 MX4000 card, but the driver is a few years old. More likely the difficulty is with the monitor - an older Samsung SyncMaster 713BM sold off by PCWorld when they were upgrading their monitors!
Unity, or what little I have seen of it, looks a little like some aspects of tablets. Speaking of tablets, has anyone taken the plunge and got themselves a tablet with Android Honeycomb? I quite fancy one, but the price seems too high at the moment and the app market needs to grow a bit.

Yes its really helpful that comment about the hardware. It left me trying
to work out what it must be and deducing that it must be the graphics
adaptor from the awful display.

Seems like ubuntu have made a mistake,
i'll be sticking with 10.04LTS
then maybe move to Mint.

just one of many using Gnome 2, Ubuntu would be one of one. If they are the
only ones with Unity it makes them very unique.
So back at the main point of this post, is Canonical going alone with Unity
a good thing or a bad thing?
Keep in mind the benefits of the FOSS model. The value is based around the
concept of lots of eyeballs crawling over the code, spotting bugs, fixing
bugs, adding features. It's the sheer number of people that make the
squashing of bugs quicker, the closing of exploits when found, quick and the
pace of development faster than proprietary models can compete with.
Spreading the development costs is another key thing.
If Canonical are the only ones doing Unity, they don't get those benefits.
It loses that advantage, to the point where it may as well be in-house
proprietary development. Compare that to Gnome 3, which will be adopted by
all of the other Gnome based distros. Gnome 3 will have people from Debian,
Mint, Fedora and a whole lot more all adding features, fixing bugs and
generally refining the experience. Can Unity keep pace? To do that it means
Canonical need to pump a lot of development resources into it. They're not
gonna get any help from the other Gnome distros.

I have had a somewhat mixed experience
upgraded my eee 1000h without any issues - it doesn't like unity - so i
reverted to the classic gnome desktop which is fine - I like unity on
the smaller screen and if the netbook was up to it i would probably run
it.
upgrade on my partners desktop was a failure as the grub was lost - I
managed to get back in through grub rescue but could not resolve the
problem (think it was a known bug) and did not have much time so
reinstalled 10.10 for him - as his PC is not that powerful and has an
old graphics card lots of the bells and whistles stuff would not have
worked anyway.
My main work PC i keep on 10.04 for stability but i did hit a problem -
I run evolution for my mail as i like the calender integration and just
use the inbuilt backup to move my emails from pc to laptop when working
away from home but discovered that in natty they have moved the location
of the folders holding the mail and seem to have separated it from the
db file so if you look in the .evolution folder in home the emails etc
are no longer there they are now in the .local/share/evolution - if you
create a backup tar file using the inbuilt evolution backup in natty -
10.04 does not recognise the file as valid. You can copy the contents of
the .local/share/evolution folder into your older version of evolution
(in .evolution) which means you get your email back but will have lost
your contacts, calender, memos and tasks. I saved them by copying the
original contacts and the other folders over from my old version
evolution but its a bit of a clunky way to do it and you are no longer
synced.
going the other way natty recognises the backup file from 10.04 as
valid.
I assume that the evolution in natty is a newer version - would uprating
to this version on 10.04 solve the problem?
