[HLUG] Pi and a laptop

I bought an adaptor to connect the HDMI from the pi to one of my ramge
of VGA screens
Problem is, the adaptor has a limited (and small) maximum resolution it
can cope with; so it works, but not at sensible resolution. I've not yet
managed to get it to work any screen at 1024x768.
Clues welcome.
