Hi
For anyone interested in photo editing and Linux / open source the Gimp has
been the defacto tool for nearly twenty years. I appreciate there are other
great tools but certainly The Gimp is the most well known and print most
used too.
The name has always been a tricky one. I remember going to HLUG public
events talking to folk about Linux and the multitude of free apps available
and the Gimp would often cause a cringe when the name was mentioned or
glossed over.
Also it has to be said development is slow. GEGL has been many, many years
in development and general usability hasn't been addressed for quite a
while.
A new fork has been started https://glimpse-editor.org with some sensible
aims to rename the project and drastically improve usability. Any
improvements will be passed back to the Gimp project too.
It sounds that if they can get enough developers enthused that this form
could take off. It's often sad to see project forks but often leads to much
new impetus and better direction.
Packages of Glimpse are available from their site and starting to be
included in distros like Arch and Mankato
What do you think? A waste of resources and duplication of effort or a
sensible move forward?
Julian
