The latest Kdenlive is great and pretty easy to get your head around it seems to accept every vid file type too.

I haven't used Kdenline for a while but I think you might be better using
the two yellow cutting marks instead.

Kdenline is powerful but not the easiest to use. Openshot may be a but
easier to get started with
