it could be worse, could have been 'rm *', as root
whatever you do, run it from a usb stick, so you have no interaction
with the hard disk file system. i do not now which file system you are
using, but a small number of blocks are kept somewhere for allocation
(it used to be in the superblock, but who knows now). if you are unlucky
the deleted blocks will get put in the cache of blocks to be used first.
another tool is called foremost again run from a usb.
if you have another computer create a usb rescue system to use.

i can probably run a workshop on file recovery if people want. over 10
years ago, i built a prototype tool to recover files from a hard disk
using file entropy and heuristics, one of my MSc students built a better
version. it is an interesting area.
