[HLUG] Was there a Ubuntu release that broke cdroms once?

Hi there

We were discussing at work about old linux releases, and I remembered that
once about 2007-2012, a well known Linux distro, think it was Ubuntu was
released with a bug that actually broke the laser on certain cdrom drives
before it was swiftly fixed.

However, I can't find anything about this with a web search, and am
wondering if I just imagined it.

Can anyone confirm this and even better show a link to this problematic
episode?
