hi Mel,
The best way of learning programming is to do programming.
Find somehting you want to create (start simple) and go from there.
The Bash shell (that runs the commands in the terminal/text window) has its
own scripting language.
I wrote a talking clock using the shell commands.

Let us know what your passions are and we can suggest a language/direction for
you to go in.
