Login-only postings and wikis don't belong in the same sentence IMO.
The whole point of wikis is that any legitimate person can maintain
the wiki quickly and easily. Having a login/approval process restricts
the site to the same level as every other content management system
out there that only allows validated persons to maintain content.

Can I suggest other means are found to combat spam rather than
permanently lock the wiki for "non-members"?

I recently applied a bunch of patches to the WolvesLUG wiki since
which there has been no spam. Now ok, the WolvesLUG wiki isn't the
most high profile site, and probably gets less attention than the
infopoint wiki, but the principle is the same.

(Un)fortunately the wiki software Jono chose for the infopoint is not
the same as that used by the WolvesLUG so other means will have to be
found to protect it, but I don't think it's beyond the wit of all the
people on this mailing list!

Cheers,
Al.
