Where are the client and server in relation to each other, would there
be a router between them by any chance?

Also, which kernel are your 8.0 and 9.0 boxes running?

I'm asking these questions as the first thing which sprang to my mind is
TCP Window Scalling.  There are still so many routers out there which
break this.
