Erm, i dont think Gentoo would be a very good choice, you need to be
reasonably experienced to use it, get a good understanding of GCC
optimisations first otherwise someone will tell you to -ffast-math and
-funroll-loop everything and you'll end up -ffucking-up-your-system..
For a prime example of that look at
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=74072 (i shudder when i see those
CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and USE flags...)
Ubuntu isn't good because its still in development (looks sweet though).
Fedora for along the same lines.
Slackware for similar reasons as Gentoo, slapt-get is a nightmare but
swaret is good
I'd suggest debian because you will learn more about the system itself,
if you are willing to ask why things are happening then you will find
yourself learning quite fast. If you dont have the time to learn the
Novell Desktop Linux or Mandrake. Probably Mandrake
