It looks as though I'm going to give Mandrake a go.

I was understood that my chip was an i386 chip Athlon. At various times 
Fedora  has  claimed  that  it is i586 and i686.  According to the 
Control Centre it has  successfully  updated to a 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 kernal 
on an i686 machine yet I originally loaded a i386 release. Could this be 
causing some of my problems?
