If its an Athlon then its i686, although its still a version of the 
enhanced i386 so for things like -mcpu= and -march= both will be i686 or 
Althlon<XP/TBird>.

Some distro's use the i386 for their list of desktop architectures and 
then give others like MIPS, SPARC, ALPHA, PPC but some give i386, i686 
and the others.
