On top of being anything direct memory access related this could be 
related to actual hardware or hardware settings.

The first thing I would do is check the cables (disk and board) etc.

Do you get these errors from every DVD?

Try adding an extra line in fstab and mounting it yourself instead of 
letting your OS do it for you because no-one knows how and where to add 
everything better than you.

The last thing would be to try with something like Xine-ui rather than 
mplayer or gmplayer (gmplayer gives you a gui)
