Agreed, but the latest version of Hotwayd was released on 23rd June
2005. This is what it says in the "About" part of the website at
http://hotwayd.sourceforge.net :
"It is now possible using hotwayd in conjunction with your favourite
POP3/SMTP implementing mail reader (and soon [read: not so soon] also
possible using IMAP4). Hotwayd allows you to do this by using the
HTTPMail protocol, the same protocol that Outlook[tm]/OE uses, to
access the hotmail or MSN servers.
HTTPMail is based on WebDAV, and is a way to access remote resources
using simple HTTP requests (which means that you can also access your
HTTPMail server behind a proxy server!)"
This means (I presume) that if hotmail mail can be downloaded in OE on
Win XP then it should be downloadable through an MUA calling Hotwayd
running as a daemon. My girlfriend can download hotmail through Win XP
but not through Hotwayd.
Also, a far older version of Gotmail can download her mail and forward
iit to another of her email addresses, allowing very easy spam
filtering, so it beats me why Hotwayd can't download her mail.
I've sent a bug report to the developers of Hotwayd to see if they know
of this problem and have any workarounds. In the meantime, if you have
difficulty connecting to Hotmail through Hotwayd, have a look at
Gotmail. Its not seamless and has to be run separately (basically
amend the sample.gotmailrc and save it in your home directory as
~/.gotmailrc and then run Gotmail). If you've set it up correctly it
can forward your Hotmail mail to another email address and then you
download it directly.
