I recommend the use of bmon for real time bandwidth monitoring and
for long term statistics i recommend install and configure snmp
(simple network monitoring protocol a complete oxymoron as its really
complex but run snmpconf and its easy to work) and mrtg (multi router
traffic grapher), i personally use this method and i always know how
much i'm using.

with bmon you can monitor in the short term and its not likely that
you'd want it to continue running (unless you put it on a tty in your
inittab) mrtg is perfect for long term monitoring as it provides
statistics over a day, week, month and year.

If you give me an ip address i would be happy to allow you access to
my mrtg pages for you to look at.
