Try it out, if a crappy intel i810 can run it smoothly try it,
personally I'm running it on my desktop FC5 machine, which is cool, but
compiz is running in software because of GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap
missing in the nvidia driver.

To think, five years ago the Debian guys were flagrantly defending an
aging distribution just as much as the gentoo guys do today ;P

Thankfully Ubuntu fixed the deficiencies of debian.
