3. Dual screen setup under X - Did this work in the end?

Oh yes! Big thanks to David H  - I could not get Suse 10 to give me Dual
headed display with a Nvidia PCIE card.

Davids approach was to do it with debian (i now have a very smooth install
of debian and fluxbox - soooooooo fast!)

Then we copied the xorg.conf to the Suse install  - and hey presto Xinerama!

Sax2 is still sulking  - but frankly i don't care  - I've got what i need!

Thanks to all who came  - especially Kev for his insights into Asterisk - a
really good session!
