please try this:
$ GST_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/local/lib/gstreamer-0.10/ istanbul

Email the author? That's what I did :) In fact that's what he suggests you
do on his website. 

He's responded to all my mails in a matter of hours. I'm really getting into
this bug-reporting lark :)

You have no idea how much time *I* have spent trying to screencast on Linux.
Copping out and using windows won't get it fixed though will it? Filing bugs
might though ;)
