I thought the VIA cpu's were i686 but admittedly I haven't bothered to
look that up. I'd been meaning to play with mini-itx kit for over a
year and finally took delivery of a board yesterday. Am playing with it
now. I'm just compiling for a 486 though so my image will be capable of
running on almost any old x86 kit.

I went the simple route and just slapped windows on using meedio as the
frontend. I don't use any tuner cards though, I only use it to play
back movies and music already on my server.
I find I don't really use it very much anymore though. I keep trying to
convince myself, and the other half, that I'll use it more if I replace
the old and huge CRT projector with a smaller, quieter, HD capable one.
As I have it all rigged up in a separate room it's a case of out of
sight out of mind.
I found after I moved the 5.1 kit out of the living room and into the
cinema room that I don't really miss it either.
I think I must be getting old as 5 years ago I wouldn't have dreamt of
not having it :)

That and my desktop isn't very luggable and of the two laptops I have
left, one is a P3 500 with 64MB ram and a buggered battery and the other
is the companies which I can't really screw around with.
