The Design of the Unix Operating System - MJ Bach is a great book on the inner workings, helps if you know C, but a fantastic book and has been read many times in the past 20 years I've been using *nix.

I had used a handful of distros before gentoo. I didn't really learn
much about the inner-workings of the system at all.
