Don't worry there are quite a few of us who mainly lurk here!
Take a look at www.bytemark.co.uk
They are Linux enthusiasts, and if you get one of their VM's or DH's you
will get root access to your own host. You can then configure it exactly
as you want it. They are a small and friendly firm who will offer
genuine help. Amongst others, they host www.debian-administration.org,
which is one of the better places for Linux info.
