Needless to say they do this by using the cheapest components and cutting corners on every area of their business. They really are cheaper than everyone else and it shows. Their kit is cheap and nasty and their tech support is inepty and useless.

I would like to add support to Mike's view on this one. There are a few
basic rules which can help you get along better in the computing world.
Things like:

Rule 1 of network design - Use as little of BT as possible.

With computer buying, the first two rules tend to be:

Rule 1 of computer buying - Avoid dell where ever possible
Rule 2 of computer buying - In general you get what you pay for

This said, there are some companies out there that do systems very
affordably and with good support.

If you really want good hardware with very good support, and are willing
to cough up, consider looking at the low end Sun kit. Their low end
ultra20 is quite affordable.

Also, you may find a mac mini a good option for a desktop (Yes, you
heard right, I did just recommend a mac product).

As ever, the choice is yours.
