I gave my dad a system for doing something similar. It's got two PIII 
400mhz processors, but the slideshow software only uses one processor so 
it's effectively a single 400mhz PIII. It has 320MB of RAM if I remember 
correctly. Seems to be good enough. He uses ProShow under XP, and the 
images are in JPEG format. ProShow resizes them on-the-fly as far as I 
can tell, and the processor seems to be good enough to do this fairly 
quickly.
