Personally, I tend to recommend IBM thinkpads, now lenevo. I have an IBM
x31 which works great, is fully supported by linux, and above all, seems
to put up with the abuse that it gets. I don't have to worry about a
special padded sleeve for it, ijust drop it in the top of the backpack,
and head off.

I have cycled over it
I have droped it
I have trodden on it

And still it works. It isn't the fastest machine on the planet. I also
put a bigger hdd in it. However, it does everything I need to do. Most
usefully tho:

It has a great keyboard
It fits in my handbag

Ultimately it depends what you want to do with a laptop as to what you
go for. But I can't recommend IBM/lenevo thinkpads enough.
