It always amazes me how people blame a distro for something like this
not working. I have seen people change distro multipul times in one day
trying to get things to work.

I am sure Puppy linux is a perfectly good distro, as I am sure Ubuntu
is. However I don't think that changing distro is the right answer here. 

Perhaps the person who is having this problem with ubuntu could provide
a more accurate error message than "it's broken" so that we might be
able to offer something more useful in the long term than "you're distro
sucks".

Oh and as for the Puppy works on old hardware, by that token you should
recommend NetBSD ;p
