You might want to look at what the samba shares actually contain and then
consider if they actually need to be samba shares.
For example if they only actually contain a small set of working documents
then they might be served up via an intranet type site. Consider Knowledge
tree, Drupal and the novell sharepoint alternative I can't remember the
name. The other advantage of this route is that the website, email via
webmail and document management all become one and the same which is nice
form an end user point of view.
