What about a GIT 'repository' containing files which are encrypted on 
save.  That way you have a distributed version of the files, and the 
files are encrypted and so safe whether in public (internet) space or 
nickable (laptop) space.  As our government shows regularly, data on 
servers is relatively secure compared to what happens when individuals 
have it.
