Many thanks, Karl. Pavucontrol was actually installed. I had tried
every combination of Alsamixer, Pavucontrol, capture, mix, volume, etc.,
etc., and Audacity Preferences that I could come up with - hundreds -
and also the Input and Output volume controls in Audacity.
I've used Audacity successfully for some years now, more or less on a
daily basis - mostly with FC2, 3, 4 and 5, as the distros have come and
gone. It always takes a fiddle to get it going, but once working goes
on faithfully. I would like to update to FC10 now, but am getting
nowhere this time. Am experimenting on a spare machine, so can try
anything, before I eventually take the plunge of a move to a new core.
Incidentally, having exactly the same problem with Ubuntu Intrepid
(8.10), despite following all the advice in the Ubuntu Fora, and using
the Ubuntu edition of Audacity 1.3.5, which is supposed to cope with 8.10.
Thanks for you help.
