Before you do that, try using dpkg -i <deb file>to install the package.
I am very much not surprised that what ever desktop environment/gui you
were using didn't understand what to do with a .deb file. 

See what dpkg says. It may still ask for a few dependencies, but you
should be able to install them with apt-get install <packages> then rerun
dpgk -i

If that doesn't work, can you mail a copy of the output from dpkg please?
