Have you checked out exactly what is available at your exchange:

The picture is confused at the moment, as there are now three principal
ways of getting ADSL:
Resold BT Wholesale ADSLmax, eg Eclipse, Zen, Plusnet etc
LLU ADSL2 services, eg Be, O2
Resold BT Wholesale WBC (21CN). This is a BT ADSL2 service available at
some exchanges, and some resellers, eg Zen, are beginning to roll this
out, but will not be complete for about a year. Not sure of the status
of others.
Anecdotally, changing to an ADSL2 service will probably double your
download (and upload!) speed on the same BT line. That's a significant
change in the time to download a Linux ISO, for instance.
