Dell are probably still selling them with Ubuntu installed, and the 
insiron I bought for Mum
a year ago is still going strong.  Mind you she doesn't move it much. 
Any machine with a large screen will be more fragile than a smaller one 
so it depends on your intended mode of use.

I had similar fun setting up the modem on my Samsung mobile phone. See 
http://www.onamagram.co.uk/projects/SamsungModem/index.html for an 
account of what I did.

Leave the modem out of the USB port, plug it in once booted and see what 
gets recorded by udev in the system messages file to find out what 
devices are appearing.  They will probably have some discovery text on 
them that gets recorded in the message giving you a clue as to what is what.
