I finally managed to get my video camera output converted with a Linux 
program. A bit of digging around revealed the existence of m2tstoavi 
which indicated that my xxx.mts video files are a part of the AVCHD set 
and that .mts files are often referred to as m2ts.

m2tstoavi took a little bit of fiddling around to get working but in the 
hands of someone better linuxed than I, it should be no problem.

I can play the output .avi files Ok with kaffeine but none of the other 
players seem to want to play the accompanying sound. Odd that.

Looks like I've got what I was looking for. Thanks for all the suggestions.
