I have installed this http://italc.sourceforge.net/ but never use it. It
might do what you want.  Or you could use something like www.yuuguu.com and
students can just view the presentation in a web browser, no client
required.

Good luck though finding a usable solution.  I think this is one application
that is missing from Linux.
