Thank you everyone for your support, and thanks in-particular to James who very sensibly suggested I try the freebsd website and sure enough there is a port for apache-mod_perl already integrated in the ports collection which I downloaded and it seems to be working fine. According to the freebsd handebook (
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/network-apache.html )
mod_perl 1.0 is available in www/mod_perl and a statically compiled
version is available in www/apache13-modperl.

Install it using ports...
