Ok now for everyone..

What Julia describes is called KMS (Kernel Mode Setting). It has become
default with Squeeze.

you can check if it is active with this:

dmesg | grep modeset

It works with Intel and ATI/AMD out-of-the-box with a debian stock
kernel or with vanilla (if compiled in). I believe nvidia can have KMS
too, but I think there is a little work involved with it.

That said, I like it very much and I have never regretted the move.
