How long ago with this troublesome ATI card?

This appears to be a more recent change that might not have been in action
(or it might have been more infant) when you tried the card.

Nvidia has been (for me) the tried and tested way with good results for
years. But if the ATI support is as good with FOSS drivers I'm all for
supporting it.
