    Thanks David for all your help. I am familiar with using fsck on 
discs, and feel sure that I can work out how to check before mounting. 
What is very annoying is that I was just getting familiar and 
comfortable with GRUB when GRUB2 comes along - Old Dogs and new 
tricks...........
