Good. Let's start with SMART...

$ sudo smartctl --scan

...which should show you /dev/sda -d sat

$ sudo smartctl /dev/sda -d sat --health

Yeah, well - I have a customer with 7 servers. They had no proper air conditioning in the server room. The file server used to crash... A LOT for no explicable reason. I tested SMART on the hard drives and got a Temperature warning. I used CPU controls to clock down the CPU and also got them to install a PROPER air conditioner. Problem went away.
