Hi Ken,

Thanks for the insight :). I was also indeed thinking about securing the server with ip-tables, domain controlling, shared profiles, etc. Also a bit about raid arrays and hardware considerations when building a server.

All in all a bit more of the advanced stuff instead of just putting the cd in and letting the setup run ;).

Joost,

I don't claim to be an expert, but have set up a few "headless boxes" for my
own use.

I simply ensure that the BIOS is set so that the machine doesn't halt when it
detects that there isn't a keyboard. Then set a static IP address (so you
know how to find it on your LAN) and make sure that the 'ssh' package is
installed. It's then easy to 'ssh' into the headless box and work from a
terminal screen. Just make sure that your firewalls are set to allow ssh.

Others are better qualified to advise on setting up and securing servers on a
headless box. My own experience is limited to local use of apache, SAMBA, and
NFS.

Regards

Ken Hough
