[Lincs] noob lurking around the edges

Just reading the latest mailing and I hope nobody minds but I've got two
pence worth. I'm a relatively new Linux user and I've dived into it full
tilt. I have a pc and two laptops and so far I've installed and used
most of the major distros and a few of the minor ones too. I've ironed
out wrinkles in my wireless network, configured graphics cards etc and I
hope I'm getting reasonably proficient.
I thought the way forward would be to join the LLUG and bounce a few
ideas round, pick up some tips and generally communicate with a few
like-minded people. I "attended" a recent IRC meeting and, sorry to say,
was quite disappointed. Most of the chat went right over my head as one
or two others were determined to prove their superior knowledge, there
was no welcome as such and the meeting degenerated into a rather puerile
discussion about potential layouts for the web-site interspersed with
some seriously dodgy homophobic comments.
Sorry if I've offended anybody but I don't think recruitment is your
problem; retention of interest may be.
