CENTRE FOR ECOLOGY AND HYDROLOGY
Oxford

The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural
Environment Research Council (NERC) carries out large-scale and
long-term research in the terrestrial and freshwater sciences to support
a broad user community. We address key environmental issues through
integrated monitoring, process studies and predictive modelling, and the
development of essential infrastructure and facilities. We currently
have the following vacancy within our busy IT Support team:

Linux/Unix System Administrator and Bioinformatics Officer

You will be responsible for administering CEH Oxford's bioinformatics
and e-Science/GRID infrastructure and provide support for scientific
staff on site.

Ideally, you have been administering and supporting UNIX/Linux systems
in a production environment for at least 2 years. More specifically, you
should have an in-depth knowledge of one or more of the following:
Linux/Unix server/cluster administration,
Distributed computing technologies (e.g. Condor, Sun GRID Engine,
Globus)
PC systems and peripherals (including upgrading components),
Scientific software for molecular biology and bioinformatics,
Database management.

A scientific background, whilst not essential, would be an advantage,
especially if it is in the areas of bioinformatics, microbiology or
virology. Knowledge of one programming language would be desirable (e.g.
Perl, Python, Java or C/C++). Good organisational and inter-personal
skills are essential, as is the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing
technology. You should be able to demonstrate good communications
skills, both written and oral. You will be self-motivated and able to
work unsupervised on a day-to-day basis.
